ECMO stands for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. ECMO is a type of artificial life support that helps a person with a life-threatening illness or whose lungs and heart are not working properly. ECMO constantly pumps blood out of your body and sends it through devices that add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.

Venoarterial (VA) ECMO can be used for heart and lung support, Venovenous (VV) ECMO is used only for lung support.
