Shelf clouds, also known as Arcus clouds, occur at the leading edge of thunderstorm. They herald the arrival of storms, and when combined with cumulonimbus thunderstorms, can look like giant alien motherships. Shelf clouds form when cold air from a thunderstorm meets warm, moist air and lifts it. Known for its unique wedge-shaped formation.
