PMDD refers to premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Some people, most commonly women, experience a severe type of PMS in the days leading up to their period. PMDD is characterized by severe emotional and physical symptoms that arise in the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (often in the week prior to menstruation) and subside soon after menstruation begins.
